There’s something incredibly special about creating custom artwork that tells a story - and not just anyone’s story, your story.
That’s the heart and soul behind my custom kaleidoscope pieces:they’re not just pretty pictures (although they are that too, if I may say so myself!). They’re kinda like layered little love letters to the people, places, and memories that matter most, and I love being able to use this art form to capture the elements that sums up someone’s character.
You might know my work already - my art prints are created from bits and bobs found in nature: feathers, seed pods, shells, dried blooms, the odd twig or two, all carefully collected, photographed, and reimagined into intricate, kaleidoscopic designs. But did you know I also offer bespoke commissioned pieces?
These custom artworks are created using items that are special to you. I photograph them, do my thing, and transform them into a one-of-a-kind framed print. Whether it’s a single treasured object or a whole bundle of meaningful mementos, I’ll create something beautiful and personal that’s totally and uniquely yours. And it’ll look pretty damn awesome on your wall, too.
So, how does a custom piece work?
Simple! Once you’ve decided to commission a piece, we’ll have a chat about what you’re envisioning - is there a person, a place, or a memory you want to honour? Do you have a box of treasures tucked away that you'd love to see turned into something timeless? From there, I’ll guide you through the process, from choosing which items to include, to colour preferences and sizing.
If you’re local to Wellington, I’ll pop to your home, photograph your little treasures, then take away the images and carefully edit and arrange them into a kaleidoscope pattern (a very time consuming but satisfying process. Finally, I’ll produce your custom print, framed and ready to hang. Each piece is lovingly handcrafted - no two are the same, and that’s exactly the point.
Ideas for your commissioned kaleidoscope
These pieces can be created around almost anything. If it means something to you, we can turn it into art. Here are just a few ideas to spark your imagination:
Memorial pieces - Honour a loved one by incorporating items they cherished, like jewellery, tools, or even natural elements from a place they loved. I know these sometimes need quick turnaround for a funeral or memorial event, too.
Celebrating a life event - Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations - mark the moment with a custom piece featuring items from the day or related to the person.
21st or milestone gifts - This could be trinkets from their travels and achievements, or pieces that sum them up as a person - even bits and pieces from their childhood and teenage years!
For the kids - This is such a fun way to capture the essence of certain ages - think things like their current obsessions by capturing photos of their favourite toys, books, or treasures they collect on walks.
Family storytelling - Combine items from each family member - grandma’s brooch, dad’s lucky coin, a stone from a family holiday - into one beautiful piece. A sweet and creative version of a family photo!
Place-based art - Bring the outside in with natural finds from a favourite beach, bushwalk, or childhood backyard. I love this as a way to capture the vibe and memories of a special, significant place.
Business story - Something a little different for the biz! Capture your brand in a creative way - items from your studio or workspace can be turned into a one-of-a-kind art piece for your office.
Why commission a custom piece?
Because art should mean something! In a world full of mass-produced everything, there’s something so grounding and joyful about having a piece in your home that tells your story. It’s a conversation starter. A memory-keeper.
And honestly? It’s just so fun to create these.
Every commission is a journey (for both of us!). You bring the story, I’ll bring the camera.
